Mortar Basic Information

The Mortar is easily one of the best defenses in the game against weaker ground units. This because a single mortar fireball is capable of severely crippling, if not wiping out completely, a large group of Barbarians, Archers, Goblins, Wall Breakers, or Wizards. Even Hog Riders, Valkyrie, and Witches have come to fear these structures.

(In-Game Description)

“The Mortar can mow down hordes of enemies by the splash damage from its shell. Don’t let enemies get too close to it!”

Mortars take out foes by shooting an explosive shell that causes splash damage to all units in the impact radius. The Mortar rate of fire may be long at 5 seconds but its incredible range of 11 tiles more than makes up for it. However, it cannot attack air units as well as ground units that are within 4 tiles from it.

A Mortar upgrade will usually cost you more than other defensive structures of the same level.  Even so, their ability to completely take out crowd of weaker ground troops makes it a force to be reckoned with and thus an important unit in any village.

Mortar Defense Strategy

Mortars and Wizard Towers can be compared for their ability to damage several units at once. However, the difference between a Mortar vs Wizard Tower when it comes to placement is that a Mortar should be in the center of your village so it can deal heavy damage to attacking troops without the risk of being destroyed. A Mortar cannot attack enemies within 4 tiles of it.

Although the Mortar cost is always higher than other structures, they are worth upgrading for their ability to kill same-level Archers and Wallbreakers in one hit. Since a Mortar’s range is up to 11 tiles and damage per shot is great for a splash-damage defense, they will often be responsible for preventing your village from getting completely destroyed. Just make sure to pair them with defenses that can attack air troops.

Mortar Offensive Strategy

If possible, try to overwhelm Mortars by sending in a barrage of Barbarians or other fast-moving troops that can get near enough to attack and not get hit by an explosive shell. A Mortar’s hit points don’t tend to be very impressive so even one Giant that isn’t being attacked can take one out, or a few Lightning Spells can do the trick too.

Their most obvious weakness is their inability to attack aerial units, which means using Balloons, Minions, etc. is a wise choice. When dropping troops in range of a Mortar, do whatever it takes to avoid them crowding together so they don’t all get killed in one or two hits. Also, do your best to find a village that is currently upgrading their Mortar– at the same time, avoid upgrading more than one Mortar at a time yourself.
