X-Bow Basic Information

Of all the defense structures in Clash of Clans, an X-Bow attack is perhaps one of the most devastating things any of your troops can suffer. This is because they are capable of unleashing an incredible amount of damage in only a short while to both land and air troops, making your X-Bow placement the difference between a good defense and bad one.  It is also one of the more unique units in the game for several reasons.

(In-Game Description)

“The X-Bow shoots mystical bolts with terrifying power. Load it with Elixir and the X-Bow works automagically. You can set it to target ground units at long ranges, or all targets at reduced range.”

First off, the X-bow is currently the only defensive building that shoots Elixir. . If it is not loaded with Elixir, it will not kill any invading troops and thus be useless. The X-Bow cost for loading it goes up with every level, but this also means that it will have a lot more ammo to shoot. To reload your X-Bow, tap it or your Town Hall and then tap the Reload button. The Inferno Tower is the only other defensive structure that requires resources to function.

The X-bow is also unique in that it can be set to two positions: ground or air. When set to “Ground”, the X-Bow’s range is very far but it can only attack ground troops. In “Air & Ground” mode the radius decreases a bit but now it can also lay waste to air troops like Minions, Dragons, etc.

Two X-Bow become available at Town Hall level 9 and one X-Bow at Town Hall level 10.

X-Bow Defensive Strategy

X-bow placement makes all the difference when it comes to repelling attacks simply because it’s heavy damage makes it a priority for the attacker. For this reason the recommended X-Bow strategy is to place it somewhere in the middle of your base and behind plenty of other structures. Since it has a long range, it will devastate troops long before they reach it– if they even do. Avoid putting it outside your walls and such so that it doesn’t get destroyed easily, especially since it is a single target defense.

It is also very important that you always refill your X-Bow with Elixir, otherwise it will be completely useless. In fact, an attacker who sees an empty X-Bow will be more likely to attack since it is an indicator that your base has received little attention and may be an easy target. X-Bow placement when you have two or more is also important: you should set one to Ground and one to Air & Ground so that only attackers with a specific offensive strategy will go for it.

X-Bow Offensive Strategy

When performing an attack on a base with X-Bows, it is very important to see what mode they are set to. You’ll want to avoid an Air attack if it is set to take out Air troops, but an X-bow set to Ground mode is very vulnerable to Balloons, Dragons, and other airborne units. Since X-bow upgrade costs are high, you’re not likely to run into more than one X-bow at around Town Hall 9. Even if you do, it’s not likely that they’ll both be Level 2 or above, depending on your own level and trophy count of course.

Since an X-Bow in action can easily mow down weak troops, use a tank unit like a Giant,  P.E.K.K.A, or Golem to absorb damage while your other troops close in to destroy it. It’s also a very smart idea to see if the X-bow is empty, which means it will not attack you at all. Lastly, one good strategy for any powerful defense structure is using the Archer Queen’s ability. In the fight of X-Bow vs Archer Queen, an AQ will usually win if she is close enough to attack and you use her Cloak ability.
